The New York Giants ended up losing two cornerbacks in one game as Brian Witherspoon learned on Tuesday that he has a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
Less than 24 hours after losing Terrell Thomas to a torn ACL, the Giants suffered yet another blow to their thin secondary when they learned about Witherspoon’s season-ending injury.
“Just wanna say thank you to all who were behind me, and supporting me! My season has come to an end TORN ACL,” Witherspoon tweeted.
The Giants placed Witherspoon on the waived/injured list and put Thomas on season-ending injured reserve. They also waived wide receiver Sam Giguere who injured his groin in training camp. The Giants added to the roster by signing defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy, an eight-year veteran who has played for four teams.

Witherspoon was scheduled for an MRI on Tuesday.
The Giants are in dire need of cornerbacks; they’ve now lost Thomas, Witherspoon and Bruce Johnson (Achilles) for the year, and first-round pick Prince Amukamara remains out with a broken foot and may not return until mid- to late-September.
Witherspoon was having an impressive camp and appeared to be on his way to securing a roster spot. However, he suffered the injury on a return late in the game.
“I was doing well in training camp,” he said Monday night before undergoing the MRI. “For me to get an injury at this point in time when I had such a good opportunity to make this team, it is disappointing.
“Just planted on a return, the last return and the knee just gave in.”
Corey Webster, Aaron Ross and Michael Coe are healthy and now top the depth chart at cornerback for the Giants.
